he poems in this ongoing collection span many years of my life. Some were written before I fully understood the craft, before I learned how to trust a quiet sentence, allow an image to breathe, or let a metaphor carry its own weight. I chose to keep them because they are evidence — the fingerprints of the person I was becoming and the writer I am today.
By the fourth and most recent chapbook, The Things the Cornfields Keep, I feel I have reached a new level in my work. It represents the strongest expression of my voice as a writer so far — a place where experience, reflection, and craft finally meet.
But this series has never been only about presenting finished work. It is about the journey of becoming a poet. It is about showing the growth, the mistakes, the searching, and the moments of discovery that shape a writer over time. Including pieces from my earlier years is not a reflection of what I lacked, but a reminder of where I began and how far the voice has traveled.
A poet is not born fully formed. A writer is built through years of writing, failing, learning, and continuing. This collection preserves that journey — from the first attempts to the moments where the voice finally begins to feel like home.
