The Man in the Static: Exploring Personal Duality

,

Spent my birthday alone, wrote this while being alone with whoever else is inside.

Mirror Static

Matthew P. Haubert 5/20/2026

[Verse 1]

I washed my face in the medicine light
Watched another person mirror me back
He had my hands but a different spine
Different way seeing inside
So I wrote my name on the bathroom glass
It fogged before I read it through
Left myself a note that said come back home
Found it in the morning, which on of me wrote it though?

[Chorus]

There’s a man in the static who looks like me
He’s got my voice but he never agrees
On which one of us is the accident
Which one of us is the real me
I call his name and my voice shakes
I call his name and the mirror shakes
I’m on the wrong side of the glass again
Which one am I, stuck inside or am I real again.

[Verse 2]

One of me who drove here doesn’t remember leaving
One of me  who arrived doesn’t know the way back
Someone kept the engine running through the screaming
And one of me laid myself down on a track
I made a list of every thing I own
Then couldn’t place the hand that held the pen
I’ve been a visitor inside this head
So long I stopped expecting to get out or in

[Bridge]

I used to know the one who answered to my name
Used to know the room, used to know the frame
But the frame got loose and the room got wrong
And I’ve been singing to the static all along

Maybe I was always more than one
Maybe that’s the only way this body runs
Maybe in the static there’s a frequency
Where all the broken pieces will finally agree

[Final Chorus]

There’s a man in the static who looks like me
He’s got my voice but he never agrees
On which one of us is the accident
Which one of us is the real me
I call his name and my voice shakes
I call his name and the mirror shakes
I’m on the wrong side of the glass again
Which one am I, stuck inside or am I real again.

[Outro]

There’s a man in the static
He looks like me
He looks like me
